You can also topcoat with a 15 minute instant enamel oil based paint, awesome paint & finish.
References :
I have done this numerous times. I used a latex stripper and metal brushes. I had a couple different size metal brushes including a small one to get in the tight corners.
The latex strippers are fabulous because they are not caustic and easy to work with.
It is plenty of work but you will be rewarded with a railing that looks brand new.

When you have it stripped go back with an oil base DTM paint. DTM is Direct to Metal paint. The oil based (alkyd) paints will give you the hardest most durable finish.
Go to a paint store to get your paint. They have DTM paints not the box stores.

How to strip a outdoor medal railing?
I need to strip the paint from my metal outdoor railing. It has A LOT of layers of paint already on it that are very chipped. I was wondering if there was some type pf solution that I could use to loosen the old paint to make it easier to remove. There are a lot of designs in the railing that will make it pretty hard to get a sander in the tight areas. Any suggestions?
Ok, I'm SLOW!!! I meant METAL!!!
